What Is Surrealism? Surrealism was developed by the 20th-century literary and artistic movement. A movement in art and literature that flourished in the early twentieth century. Surrealism aimed at expressing imaginative dreams and visions free from conscious rational control.
Salvador Dali: Salvador Dali was a great Spanish artist. Most of the works he did revolved around painting, sculpture work, and he worked as a graphic artist and designer as well. During the course of his career, he experienced many different art forms, and experimented with a few styles, allowing him to further his points of expression, and the design pieces which he created during the illustrious and extensive career that he had. From an early age, Dali was encouraged to practice his art and would eventually go on to study at an academy in Madrid. In the 1920's, he went to Paris and began interacting with artists such as Picasso, which led to Dali's first Surrealist phase. He is perhaps best known for his 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory, showing melting clocks in a landscape setting.
This is a really intriguing photograph because the surrealism shown is very creative. I think the use of lighting is very effective as it gives a gruesome effect as the head of Salvador is in a dark room and just his head popping out from underneath a table. The photographer has taken this picture slightly underexposed to give it a eerie atmosphere.
This photograph interests me more than the rest because its amazing how the water is caught in the air, I know the photographer used fast shutter speed to capture this image. Using fast shutter speed made the picture more attractive as it makes the viewer feel like they are there, it almost comes alive. Also I think the photographer is trying to express his life as he is an artist, he could possibly be trying to show that as an artist you need to be creative. Salvador has a pattern in the majority of his photographs, the majority of them are black and white which shows that whether a photograph is in colour or black and white they are all beautiful and unique in their own ways. Maybe Dali wanted to hide a message about people and racism due to skin colour differences...
Man Ray: Man Ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. In 1915, Ray held his first solo art show at the Daniel Gallery which featured many paintings and drawings. It was around this time that he also began to get into photography.
His art spanned painting, sculpture, film, prints and poetry, and in his long career he worked in styles influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Dada and Surrealism. He also successfully navigated the worlds of commercial and fine art, and came to be a sought-after fashion photographer. He is perhaps most remembered for his photographs of the inter-war years, in particular the camera-less pictures he called 'Rayographs', but he always regarded himself first and foremost as a painter.
I dislike this image because in my opinion it is an unattractive, plain and dull. This image does not contain any colour therefore it is boring and tedious. Nothing in this image stands out or is bold this makes the image unexciting.
I like this photograph that Salvador has taken because the little girl has little gems on her face representing tears. The black and white effect makes it seem like she's thinking about something in the past, maybe when she had a hard time and is reminiscing about it; therefore her tears. The photographer has taken it at such an angle where the viewer is only to concentrate on her emotion.
Plan For First Shoot: For my first shoot I am doing Fairy Tales. I have chosen Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. I will take full body pictures of seven different boys, outside on the field. I will then photo shop each person to make the boys little dwarfs. After doing the dwarves I will take photographs of Neelam as Snow White.
First Shoot:
These are my favourite photographs of the boys that I edited using Photoshop onto a Snow White background and made them all dwarf sizes.
I have stopped this shoot at this stage as I tried and am not happy with the way it is coming out.
Plan For Second Shoot: I am going to take close up photographs of Femi with coloured gems on her face, under her eyes. The angle will be very close and I will use a large depth of field to keep her face in focus as well as the gems. I am inspired to do this shoot because of Salvador Dali.
Second Shoot:
Worst:
This is my worst photograph because my model's eyes are not open or looking in the correct direction. Also I was too zoomed in and didn't capture all of the gems on her face.
Best:
This is my best photograph from this shoot because my model Femi is facing straight and her eyes are looking up and to her left (as asked). Also I used a large depth of field to capture the gems but also keeping Femi's eyes in attention.
